My story begins as a student in Beijing studying Chinese Law at Tsinghua University. I quickly fell in love with China as a country, the people, and the energy of the big cities such as Beijing and Shanghai. After a brief employment at a large bank in America, my home country, I came to Shanghai to work for UnionPay International as Legal Counsel. On an average day I might work on a contract with a major bank in Hong Kong, negotiate with central banks in southeast Asia, analyze regulatory issues in the United States, and have a concerfernce call with colleagues from the Middle East. The work here is broad, diversified, and impactful. As an employee of UnionPay International, you will get exposure to a growing industry, a global outlook, and gain skills that will benefit you in this interconnected and technologically oriented world.

As an American working in a Chinese global company I may have a different perspective than most people working in the Headquarters in Shanghai. Compared to other large Western companies, UnionPay International will expect a lot from you if you are a new employee by providing you much more responsibility and influence than you would otherwise have in most global organizations. Your thoughts matter here and management is always willing to listen to make this a better place to work; this is not always true for new hires in global companies.

What do you want out of a career? This is a question that everyone asks themselves at some point and could determine, to a large extent, the majority of your life. It is so important to pick a career and employer that is exciting, growth-oriented, and dynamic. I can say without a doubt that UnionPay International is the best employer I have ever had and one of the most fulfilling and satisfying careers that I could have imagined --- I hope one day you feel the same as me.

Taking up employment with the largest card association in the world was easily the best career decision that I have ever made. Having worked in the card industry for 25 years and switching to UPI was simply a breath of fresh air. Since day one I was struck by the positive energy of the organisation and faced with a culture of individuals who was actively looking for reasons to do business.

Obstacles are seen as challenges and leadership always encourages us to explore different approaches to solve them by applying lateral thinking. This “can do” culture is simply priceless given the size of our organisation. I guess UPI has managed to retain a small company feel, where individual voices are still heard, notwithstanding the fact that it is the largest global card association. Our opinions are taken into consideration and at the end of the day this translates to job satisfaction, in that one feels valued, knowing that our inputs made a difference in being part of the world’s fastest growing payments network.

A further positive aspect of the organisation is the diversity that one encounters in UPI. Although the DNA of the organisation is Chinese, a multitude of cultures and diversity will be found in the organisation, which again supports the flexibility of the organisation in adapting our product and servicing offerings to the market.

In closing if you would like to be involved in one of the biggest and fastest corporate growth stories in the world, UPI is the place for you!
