To me, ExxonMobil is just like an aircraft carrier where you can find a lot to explore and conquer.

I graduated from Sun Yat-sen University with a bachelor’s degree in finance. I had never thought about working in a petrochemical company before graduation, but the opportunity just came to me. Without a doubt, I embarked on ExxonMobil and started my journey.

My first assignment was a sales engineer in Polypropylene business. After one month classroom and on-job trainings, I started to do real business and earn money for the company. Six months later, I was handling two key accounts and more than one million USD businesses every month. My achievement in developing new grades and new customers also helped me to win a global award.

The journey in sales was great. However, I had a strong desire to gain more expertise in other areas. I started thinking whether I can work as a technologist. Since then I was very focused in all the technical trainings, and contacted the technology experts whenever I had a question. Meanwhile I expressed my strong interest in technology to my supervisor and finally got a new assignment in Polypropylene Technology in May 2011.

The new role was much more challenging as I didn’t have any chemical educational background. But this was also the reason why I loved it. It provided me with plenty of learning and development opportunities, and helped me to stretch myself. Three months later, I was sent to the global technology center in Houston where you can find many experts in different fields. This overseas training helped junior technologists to learn knowledge and grow their competencies. I brought all the questions I had and found the solutions via learning from the experts. More importantly, I completed a project study and filed a technical report.

In June 2013 I was transferred to a new function – Marketing in Specialty Elastomer Business. I feel very comfortable with this transition as I have both sales and technology experience. I am ready to further explore and stretch myself again.

The ExxonMobil aircraft carrier is so big that I will need my whole career life to explore…

Eight years ago, I started my career in ExxonMobil as a fresh graduate from Shanghai Jiao Tong University. My first position was Technical Helpdesk Engineer in AP Lubricant Technical Centre located in Shanghai. The company provides systematic on-line and classroom trainings to new employees, covering product application, technical knowledge, personal effectiveness soft skills and business knowledge. Such trainings helped to prepare me for the first role as Technical Helpdesk Engineer to support the customers, distributors and internal colleagues by answering their enquiries related to sales channels, product application and technology. Looking back, it’s really a good experience for me to get in touch with other functions and colleagues. I became aware of the customers’ needs and concerns. This was a good foundation for my second position.

In ExxonMobil, job rotation is a key element of people development. My second role in ExxonMobil was Field Engineer. This is a challenging and interesting position. The daily work included but not limited to visit different plants, meet with different customers, do trouble shooting, conduct training and develop win-win solutions. I apply my learning to work as well as my personal life.

In 2014, I a short-term assignment in Singapore. It was a wonderful experience to work in AP headquarters. , which helps to enlarge my horizon and improve my skills and competency.I also made a few really good friends there.

Early this year, I have taken up a new assignment as an Advanced Engineer in Passenger Vehicle Lubricants Section under Products Technology in US. I started to learn how to develop product, how to prove product performance and the process to ensure product integrity. It’s always challenging and interesting to learn something new.

ExxonMobil provides a good platform for you to meet people of the same value, whom you will cherish for your lifetime!

Four years have passed like a blink. To me, it’s just my start of exploring the world.

2011: After graduation from Tongji University with a master’s degree in industrial engineering, I joined ExxonMobil and began to experience a fantastic journey of learning and growing. As a campus hire, I finished six months’ L&S on-boarding program in Shanghai which helped me to complete the transition from a school student to a professional employee. Through exposure in three different functional departments, I began to familiarize myself with ExxonMobil business model and establish my own networks in the company.

2012-2013: My first assignment was an IL (Industrial Lubricant) Territory Manager located in Chengdu, Sichuan province. I was responsible for industrial lubricant business in Gansu and Qinghai provinces. From customer visit to seminar presentation and, from distributor business review to DSR (Distributor Sales Representative) coaching, I improved my sales skills step by step. Besides work, I also enjoyed the different cultures and lifestyles in western China and explored 10 provinces in the region. I cannot tell you how I felt when I stood in front of the Potala Palace or reached the top of Mount Huashan.

2014: I took up my second assignment as a Business Development Advisor in Singapore. It allowed me to broaden my horizon to understand the whole Asia Pacific markets. Immersed in an international working environment, I’ve learned how to effectively communicate with team members of different cultures and backgrounds, and positively influence others. I was involved in different projects and improved my cross-functional coordination ability.

2015: At the beginning of this year, I took up my current position as a Distributor Business Consultant in Beijing. Now I learned how our distributor run business, including managing the cash flow, motivating team members, arranging logistics and managing inventory, etc. It is another new journey.

ExxonMobil does not just offer a job, but a career path for one to advance. In ExxonMobil, we always a keep a safety mindset and conduct business with integrity while taking into account flexibility in personal lifestyle. Please come and join the ExxonMobil family.

I joined ExxonMobil Chemical in April 2013 after graduating from Shanghai Jiao Tong University with a dual master’s degree in chemical engineering and industrial engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology. But my journey with Exxonmobil actually started earlier, as a summer intern in 2012.

The internship program is well-designed, including tailor-made trainings, daily operations, mini projects, and great networking activities. During the 2-month full-time internship, I worked in the Asia Pacific Polyolefins logistic team supporting different business units on the logistic issues.

I was encouraged to take initiatives in improving current operational procedures. I finished 3 mini-projects by the end of the internship focusing on data analysis and process improvement. The most challenging part was my lack of commercial knowledge. I had neither academic background nor relevant experience, and had to quickly learn about customs clearance process, international commercial terms, etc. Thanks to this experience, I had a better understanding of commerce and trade, and my confidence built up through my contributions to the team.

The whole internship was a wonderful experience to me, so I accepted work offer from ExxonMobil without hesitation. I am now Sales Engineer in Specialty Elastomer Business (SEB), working with different functions internally, such as Supply Chain, Customer Service, Demand Planner, and externally with customers. I continuously learn about our products, market, and technology. This position requires the ability of problem solving and multi-tasking. Every day, I am facing different unpredictable issues regarding sales orders, supply and inventory, demand forecast, and customer feedbacks. Each issue is like one piece of the puzzle. By solving and learning from it, I start to see the whole picture of business operations.

For a new hire, ExxonMobil provides various opportunities to build up our own network in the company, such as lunch with leader program, alumni network activities, mentor program, and recreation clubs. Among them, I enjoy lunch with leader most, because this is a great chance to talk with management level from different functions. They are all very easygoing, and willing to share their stories, which is really inspiring to freshmen like me. I am also amazed by their multi-country and multi-function working experiences in the company. I strongly feel the company values people, and provides long-term career development plan for each individual.

It is a great starting point for me to grow with Exxonmobil. I can see myself improving from all aspects every day here. If you have the same dream, apply and join us!

Right after graduating from Tsinghua University with a master’s degree in polymer science, I joined ExxonMobil in 2008. In the last 6 years I had 5 assignments and thus 4 job transitions. Every job change was associated with some challenges by nature, but one of the most challenging ones I had was from an individual contributor to a supervisor. Let me share with you some of my learning from this experience.

· I am not supposed to get things done all by myself. It is neither about capability nor the scale of the job. It is all about developing people - taking tremendous amount of time to help them grow and undergo a fulfilling and successful career. Their success is my success. Their failure is my failure.

· We are all different. Everyone has different skill sets, distinct background and personality. I need to tailor approaches accordingly in order to continuously stretch and develop them to full potential. As an example, for fresh graduates, I provide great details of a project and embed more checking points in the process to make sure it is on track. On the contrary, I would just tell the objective with a few key points as reminder to a relatively experienced employee and really leave the flexibility and space to him or her.

· I could not only look after my own career but to look after around 15 people’s development opportunities. On one hand, I need to constantly look for valuable projects across the organization and regions to expose our team members to new challenges. On the other hand, I would utilize an incredible amount of ExxonMobil tools and processes to assess development needs together with my team members. Only in this way, we could correctly map the needs and offers, and our employees could obtain the most suitable opportunities for them.

· Supervisor is not a boss. The company respects people and we respect each other. We don’t just assign tasks to the people but we empower them. We influence the way they think, we convince them the value of the work they do and we let them make decisions. As a supervisor, my job is not to tell them how to do it or you must do it. My job is to provide a direction, assistance and support along the way. My 2 years of experience as a supervisor taught me that a good supervisor should not only improve team quality and efficiency but also heighten the whole team’s morale.

· Last point I would like to share is that the company values people who spend time on people development. It is challenging to be a supervisor but really a great opportunity to understand and learn the value of developing people.

Once again, the first 6 years in ExxonMobil is just a start and I will certainly continue to enjoy my journey. Are you interested to join me?

I have been working in ExxonMobil Chemical for 14 years with 9 different assignments in 3 different locations – Shanghai, Singapore and Houston. My career in ExxonMobil is full of challenges as well as fun and rewards. The company offers me plenty of opportunities to learn and to grow in a very comprehensive way.

Here due to space limits I’d like to share with you more about my relocation assignment in Houston, where I greatly improved my knowledge, skills, maturity, and made good friends from different countries.

My first assignment in Houston was in Financial Planning, working on financial models to assess business earnings and plan specific targets to achieve business results over a longer term. After a 6-month project of corporate planning, I became Polyolefins Global Sales Planner, leading a virtual team with members from 6 countries and 5 different locations.

From these 2 assignments, I summarized a few suggestions regarding how to work with people with diversified background and how to be successful in a global company.

· Set your expectations and keep going forward. It is very basic that you need to know where you want to be, set your expectations, and keep yourself going toward the target.

· Stay connected with an effective network. Networking is one of the key elements to success, not only for work, but also for life. When I was in Houston, there’s a network called Asia Network, formed by a group of expatriates from Asian countries with similar experiences. From time to time, we organized activities such as holiday gatherings, fundamental Mandarin lessons and sessions to share different national festivals and legends, etc. This network kept our life outside of work alive and versatile.

· Speak up and create your own presence. In Chinese traditional culture, people tend to be quiet and silent as they believe their hard work will be eventually noticed and rewarded. However, in a multi-national and multi-cultural company, you need to create your own presence, stay engaged and take full ownership of opportunities. You need to step out and eventually find your own voice!

I’ve enjoyed my work and life with ExxonMobil over the past 14 years, and really grew together with ExxonMobil. If you like to take on challenges and like a diversified long-term career path, don’t miss this opportunity. ExxonMobil is the company that will build up the platform and provide what you need to show what you can do!

I graduated from Fudan University in 2009, with a master's degree in public economics. Right after graduation, I joined ExxonMobil's finance organization. Being a fresh graduate at that time, I worried about what is the most appropriate career path for me. Therefore, during an employee forum, I raised this question to a senior manager. His answer was “No worry. Let ExxonMobil lay out the path for you.” Now as I look back, it is indeed a good advice.

Before taking up my current supervisory position, I’ve been assigned to 5 different roles: inventory accounting, financial reporting, business analysis, financial statements review, and controls advisory. These roles provided me the opportunities to learn the various elements of ExxonMobil’s financial accounting and reporting processes. Through these exposures, I was able to appreciate the overall system, from accounting of business transactions to generating financial statements; from planning and budgeting to stewardship and reconciliation of the financial results against plan; from only involved in one part of the process to capable of assessing the control effectiveness of the overall system. It is amazing to see how complex and sophisticated the whole accounting process is and how it is structured methodically to ensure effective financial control, accurate reporting and ultimately maximizing return to our shareholders.

The job rotations also exposed me to various business lines in the Company. When I was responsible for inventory accounting for the China Lubricants and Specialties Business, I worked closely with the relevant functions in business to track inventory movement from raw materials to finished products, from blending plant to warehouse, and from warehouse to end customers. When I became the Business Analyst for Hong Kong Fuels Marketing, I had very close interaction with the business and was exposed to daily business operations, such as pricing strategies, promotion campaigns, supply planning. This assignment helped me understand more deeply how these business activities translate into our bottom line earnings.

During my overseas assignment at downstream headquarters in US, I learnt a lot about the global downstream businesses. Though some of them currently have no presence in China, I believe that with the market growth in China, someday they may set up their operations here.

Equipped with business knowledge and accounting experience, I was promoted to Financial Accounting & Reporting Unit Supervisor in April 2015, supporting Hong Kong affiliates. I’m now leading a team of 6 analysts. In the course of coaching and developing my team to their full potential, I gained deeper understanding of ExxonMobil's people development strategy. So my advice to you is to be open to all opportunities, and be ready to learn. Just follow the path ExxonMobil lays out for you and you’ll be amazed how far you can reach in your career.

I joined ExxonMobil right after I got my MBA degree from Vanderbilt University (Nashville, Tennessee), and I am now in my 4th assignment. If I were to summarize my past 6 years’ experience in one word, it would be “challenging”. I started as a Reporting Analyst in Business Analysis & Reporting (BAR). It was quite a big change from a “student” to an “employee”, from “classroom learning” to “on-the-job training”, and from “studying” to “working”. I believe all fresh graduates will experience such challenges and we need some time adapting to the new work environment.

My second assignment was to lead a small team, still in BAR function. The key challenge of this assignment is people – I need to work with the team to deliver high quality reports, and also interface with many other teams to achieve best result. Changing from “dealing with numbers” to “dealing with people” was a challenge for me, but also interesting as well.

My third assignment as the Internal Auditor was the most challenging one, because my job was to continuously challenge others. A typical internal audit lasts for 3~4 weeks, and in each audit, I need to learn the whole process of the audited function in a very short period of time and identify control gaps. Imagine a 3-year-experience auditor questioning a 30-year-experience manager that the process control has a gap, you shall get a feeling how challenging it is!

I am now in my 4th assignment in Corporate Financial Services (CFS), and my challenge is to manage a team who has better accounting knowledge than me. This is my first assignment in CFS, where accounting knowledge is critical. Six years in the Company, and I am still facing the challenge in learning more basic knowledge: foreign exchange, pension, cost allocation, etc. ExxonMobil is a huge organization that you will never stop learning something new.

If you are lucky to join ExxonMobil in the future, you will experience many different challenging jobs. And at the same time, you will be provided with tools and support for you to be successful. I believe you will enjoy all the challenges as much as I do, and grow together with ExxonMobil!

Current position: Credit Supervisor
Current work location: Shanghai
Year joined the company: November, 2009
I graduated from Shanghai International Study University in 2007, majoring in international trade and economics (Japanese). After working in an audit firm for 2 years, I started my career in ExxonMobil in 2009 as Credit Analyst supporting Japan Fuels Marketing credit migration from Japan to Shanghai. This was really a good beginning of my career in ExxonMobil, as it was a perfect job to utilize my Japanese language skill and previous finance related work experience.

Interestingly, three years later, I participated in a restructuring project to migrate the credit support work back to Japan. This was the first time I felt from my personal experience that the only thing constant is the change itself. And in the process, we were given the chance to learn how to respond to and manage those changes so as to turn it into opportunities to develop our organization and ourselves.

With the above project experience, later in July 2012, I had a chance to participate in another challenging and interesting project - to migrate the credit support for Asia Pacific Commercial Aviation Business from Prague to Shanghai. In this role, I worked in a virtual team and functionally reported to Prague Credit Center, which enabled me to work closely with folks from different countries, and have more exposure to global management.

Apart from daily work, I also took additional roles in ExxonMobil. For instance, I was elected as the Recreation Club Chairperson to plan and organize recreational activities for ExxonMobil employees, including the annual dinner for more than 400 employees. I really enjoyed working with my team to bring enjoyment to all our colleagues. This experience benefited my leadership skill development as well as enlarged my network in ExxonMobil.

I was promoted to Credit Team Lead in July 2013, and further to Credit Supervisor around one year later. I started to learn team management skill in addition to credit operations. Now, in addition to the 3 members in Shanghai, I also have 2 team members in Bangkok functionally report to me. I did find what I learned in my previous positions helpful to my current job to manage this mini cross-country team.

There are good overseas exposure opportunities in a big multi-national company like ExxonMobil. I have taken 2 overseas short-term assignments recently. In Jan 2014, I went to Fairfax, USA to work on Outlook and Stewardship for Downstream Global Treasurer’s for 2 weeks and in Sept. 2014, I was assigned to support Internal Audit Department in the audit of a Japan joint venture, leveraging on my language skills.

Looking back to all these experiences in the past five and half years, I truly believe that ExxonMobil is a fantastic place to develop my skill sets and progress my career. I really enjoy my journey in ExxonMobil.

I graduated from the Business School of Fudan University with a bachelor's degree in financial management. In 2010, I was given the opportunity to be a member of the ExxonMobil family.

The five years in ExxonMobil have been a tremendously great experience for me. Right after I joined the company, I started as a Financial Analyst focusing on corporate financial reporting. This position gave me a first taste of ExxonMobil's robust system in terms of how to prepare corporate financial statements and how to perform analysis for the business reasons behind the financial data. It also broadened my view of the Company’s chemical & downstream business and the strong internal controls in the organization.

One year later, I was rotated to my second assignment as the General Ledger Analyst. The position required me to demonstrate strong financial accounting skills, at the same time it also provided me with even more exposure. During this assignment, I had the chance to participate or lead in a few internal projects. One example was to work with the Tax Department on the China tax reform from business tax to value added tax. My project management and interpersonal skills were greatly enhanced from this exposure.

Within a short period of time, I was given the opportunity to become the BSAM (Balance Sheet Account Management) Coordinator, a position that offered me global exposure to work with people from different functions and countries. I also got the chance to travel to US to attend the CFS (Corporate Financial Services) Global Summit and BSAM GFCM (Global Financial Coding Module) Network Workshop for two weeks, which was a very impressive and exciting experience.

Last June, I was promoted to my first supervisory position to be the Financial Accounting & Reporting Unit Supervisor for Taiwan & Korea Team leading a group of 6 Financial Analysts. Changing from being an individual contributor to a supervisor requires me to not only continuously improve myself but also be able to unlock the potential of my team members, coach them and drive the whole team’s excellent performance. It is not just an exciting journey but also generating lots of challenges as well, and that’s exactly what attracts me in this Company. The excitement never ends.

During the past five years, I have witnessed my personal growth and development and now I became very accustomed to taking up new challenges. Moreover, ExxonMobil also gave me a lot of opportunities to participate in different social activities, such as off-site meetings, family day, birthday party, and annual dinner, etc. These activities can be a good platform for others to know me more and also help me build positive work relationship with my co-workers. The positive work environment keeps me motivated and passionate about my work assignments. I look forward to seeing you join ExxonMobil and enjoy the wonderful journey with me together.

I joined ExxonMobil right after my graduation from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2010 as a campus hire. I have a joyful experience in ExxonMobil and I am fully convinced what ExxonMobil offers is far more than a job, but a wonderful long-term career.

In the first three years, I was privileged to have the opportunities to work in several different positions in Corporate Financial Services (CFS) and Business Analysis & Reporting (BAR) functions covering Banking Accounting, Inventory Accounting, General Ledger, Financial Reporting, Corporate Reporting and Business Analysis. Through these assignments, I was equipped with full arms of data analytics, financial accounting & reporting, and stewardship analysis skills. Job rotations not only expedited my learning pace to pick up new knowledge, but also sharpened my critical thinking. I was motivated to seek continuous improvements and take initiative to implement process improvement steps.

Having benefited from the comprehensive experience in different accounting areas, in Oct 2013, an even more exciting assignment came along whereby I was assigned to be the single full-time Project Analyst representing BAR to support and implement North Asia STRIPES using the SAP platform. As an individual contributor, this role required me to work independently to deliver timely and high quality strategy development and project management. I enjoyed this project assignment very much since it provided me the opportunity to work with a team of multi-cultural, diverse and talented resources from both locally and internationally.

After the STRIPES project, I was given a wonderful short-term assignment outside of Finance, as the Sales Business Advisor of the Downstream Lubes Sales Business. Conducting sophisticated analysis on sales performance to be incorporated in the review deck to AP zone, developing the Three-Year Plan and managing the 2016 Budget cycle are the key deliverables during this three-month assignment. Working in the business line widened my perspective. It enabled me to analyze the business performance with more insights, better understanding the stories behind the data by relating the data to the macro-economic environment, competitive landscape and trends of customers.

In this August, I was promoted to be the Unit Supervisor of Intercompany Accounting which started a new journey to develop leadership skills and capability to extend team success. I’m looking forward to the opportunities and challenges of this new assignment.

ExxonMobil really puts strong emphasis on career development of their human resources through continuous multi-functional exposure and progressive skill set development over time. The opportunities will always be there for good employees to test their limits and grow to their full potential. I really appreciate the opportunities and challenges given to me in ExxonMobil which allows me to achieve more than what I thought I could.

ExxonMobil is an excellent place to start a career, has talented and motivated people to work with, and offers great opportunities to grow fast. I am looking forward to seeing you join ExxonMobil and making progress together with ExxonMobil!
