To me, ExxonMobil is just like an aircraft carrier where you can find a lot to explore and conquer. I graduated from Sun Yat-Sen University with a Bachelor’s degree in Finance. I had never thought about working in a petrochemical company before graduation, but the opportunity just came to me! Without a doubt, I embarked on ExxonMobil and started my journey. My first assignment was a sales engineer in Polypropylene business. After one month classroom and on-job trainings, I started to do real business and earn money for the company. Six months later, I was handling two key accounts and more than one million USD businesses every month. My achievement in developing new grade and new customer also helped me to win a global award. The journey in sales was great. However, I had a strong desire to gain more expertise in other areas. I started thinking whether I can work as a technologist. Since then I was very focused in all the technical trainings, and contacted the technology experts whenever I had a question. Meanwhile I expressed my strong interest in Technology to my supervisor and finally got a new assignment in Polypropylene Technology in May 2011. The new role was much more challenging as I didn’t have any chemical educational background. But this was also the reason why I loved it. It provided me with plenty of learning and development opportunities, and helped me to stretch myself. Three months later, I was sent to the global technology center in Houston where you can find many experts in different fields. This overseas training helped junior technologists to learn knowledge and grow their competencies. I brought all the questions I had and found the solution via learning from the experts. More importantly, I completed a project study and filed a technical report. In June 2013 I was transferred to a new function – Marketing in Specialty Elastomer Business. I feel very comfortable with this transition as I have both sales and technology experience. I am ready to further explore and stretch myself again. The ExxonMobil aircraft carrier is so big that I will need my whole career life to explore…

I have been working in ExxonMobil for 7 years. Over these years, I had the opportunity to experience different jobs - from Technology to Marketing and then to Sales. Like an actor playing different roles to learn the art, I learned different things about the company and different businesses, which surely helped my career development. I started from an Application Technology & Development Engineer for Films business without any experience. But thanks to the onboarding and training programs I quickly got started. The journey was challenging because of the tough business nature and also the experienced customers I had to handle. I still remember the moment that we were challenged in front of a huge group of customers and one could clearly feel their sentiment out of control. When I look back, that was actually fun and helpful – which helped me to grow quickly from a freshman to an industry player. I learned from this job my first lesson better than from any other courses that to gain customer’s trust, you should listen to them, tell the truth and carry out actions. 2 years later before I moved to another position, those tough customers had already become friends with me! When I moved to Intermediates business as Oxo AP Product Planner, I met the biggest challenge right after my excitement about the relocation to Hong Kong -I had an opportunity to present to our Vice President in 2 months. The topic was about a comprehensive competition study. To tell a persuasive story, I need to understand the Oxo business very well and be confident with the study, including a lot of data analysis. However, just on the day before the presentation, there was a correction suggested by my manager. Given such a short lead time, I had to make sure our report is objective and practical. Fortunately, the presentation went well. I truly learned from this episode that how important data integrity and analytical thoroughness are for a sound business judgment. Thanks to my lesson learned from the very beginning, I have improved my logic thinking and analytical ability in my 2-year’s Product Planner life. Now as Fluids Sales Supervisor, I’m getting much closer to the frontier of commercial world, and taking on more leadership responsibilities. Apart from sales stewardship, I find it always pleasant and exciting to see the younger people within my team growing with escalating competency and clearer career prospect. Because I had just gone through a similar stage of early career, I truly share their concerns so what I’ve learnt can effectively help them. As return, I could improve my leadership skills and there are still a lot more ahead to pick up. Career is a long journey, and there are different challenges ahead awaiting. I never found myself ready for a new challenge, but when I was going through it, I could always find somewhere to utilize what I’ve learnt. I don’t know what challenge will come the next, but I’m confident I will enjoy handling it. I guess most people within EM share the same feelings and that’s actually a good feeling!

Seven years ago, I started my career in ExxonMobil as a fresh graduate from Shanghai Jiaotong University. My first position is Technical Helpdesk Engineer in AP Lubricant Technical Helpdesk Centre located in Shanghai. The company provides systematic on-line and classroom trainings to new employees, covering product application, technical knowledge, personal effectiveness soft skills and business knowledge. Such trainings have helped to prepare me for the first role as Technical Helpdesk Engineer to support the customers, distributors and internal colleagues by answering their enquiries related to sales channels, product application and technology. Looking back, it’s really a good experience for me to get in touch with other functions and colleagues. I become aware of the customers’ needs and concerns. This has laid a good foundation for my second position. In ExxonMobil, job rotation is key element of people development. My second role in ExxonMobil is Field Engineer. This is a challenging and interesting position. I need to visit different plants meet with different customers, do trouble shooting, conduct training and develop win-win solutions. I apply my learning to work as well as my personal life. I started my short term assignment in Singapore early this year. It is a wonderful experience to work in AP headquarter. I have gained new knowledge and improved my skill and competency.I have also made a few really good friends in Singapore. ExxonMobil provides a good platform for you to meet people of the same value, whom you will cherish for your lifetime!

Three years has passed like a blink. To me, it’s just my start of exploring the world. 2011: After graduation from Tongji University with a master degree in Industrial Engineering, I joined ExxonMobil and began to experience a fantastic journey of learning & growing. As a campus hire, I finished six months’ L&S on-boarding program in Shanghai which helped me to complete the transition from school student to profession employee. Through exposure in three different functional departments, I began to familiar with ExxonMobil business model and establish my own networks in the company. 2012-2013: My first assignment was an IL (Industry Lubricant) Territory Manager located in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. I was responsible for industry lubricant business in Gansu & Qinghai provinces. From customer visit to seminar presentation and, from distributor business review to DSR (Distributor Sales Representative) coaching, I have improved my selling skills step by step.Besides work, I also enjoyed the different cultures and life styles in China West, and explored 10 provinces in the west area. I cannot tell you how I feel when I stood in front of Potala Palace or reached the top of Hua Mountain. 2014-Now: At the beginning of 2014, I have taken up my second assignment as a Business Development Advisor in Singapore. My first position has offered me the opportunity to understand the China local markets. My current role allows me to broaden my horizon to understand the whole Asia Pacific markets. Immersed in an international working environment, I have learned how to effectively communicate with team members of different cultures and backgrounds, and positively influence others. I have been involved in different projects and improved my cross-function coordination ability. Every day here is the start of a new learning journey for me. ExxonMobil does not just offer a job, but a career path for one to advance. In ExxonMobil, we always keep a safety mindset and conduct business with integrity while taking into account flexibility in personal lifestyle. Please come and join the ExxonMobil family!

I joined ExxonMobil Chemical in April 2013 after graduating from Shanghai Jiao Tong University with a dual master degree in Chemical Engineering and Industrial Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology. But my journey with Exxonmobil actually starts earlier, as a summer intern in 2012. The internship program is well-designed, including tailor-made trainings, daily operations, mini projects, and great networking activities. During the 2-month full-time internship, I worked in the Asia Pacific Polyolefins logistic team supporting different business units on the logistic issues. I was encouraged to take initiatives in improving current operational procedures. I finished 3 mini-projects by the end of the internship focusing on data analysis and process improvement. The most challenging part was my lack of commercial knowledge. I had neither academic background nor relevant experience, and had to quickly learn about customs clearance process, International Commercial Terms, etc. Thanks to this experience, I had a better understanding in commerce and trade, and my confidence built up through my contributions to the team. The whole internship was a wonderful experience to me, so I accepted work offer from ExxonMobil without hesitation. I am now Sales Engineer in Specialty Elastomer Business (SEB), working with different functions internally, such as Supply Chain, Customer Service, Demand Planner, and externally with customers. I continuously learn about our products, market, and technology. This position requires the ability of problem solving and multi-tasking. Every day, I am facing different unpredictable issues regarding sales orders, supply and inventory, demand forecast, and customer feedbacks. Each issue is like one piece of the puzzle, by solving and learning from it, I start to see the whole picture of business operations. For a new hire, ExxonMobil provides various opportunities to build up our own network in the company, such as lunch with leader program, alumni network activities, mentor program, and recreation clubs. Among them, I enjoy lunch with leader most, because this is a great chance to talk with management level from different functions. They are all very easy-going, and willing to share their stories, which is really inspiring to freshmen like me. I am also amazed by their multi-country and multi-function working experiences in the company. I strongly feel that company values people, and provides long-term career development plan for each individual. It is a great starting point for me to grow with Exxonmobil. I can see myself improving from all aspects every day here. If you have the same dream, apply and join us!

Right after graduating from Tsinghua University with a Master Degree of Polymer Science, I joined ExxonMobil in 2008. In the last 6 years I had 5 assignments and thus 4 job transitions. Every job change had been associated with some challenges by nature but one of most challenging ones I had was from an individual contributor to supervisor. Let me share with you some of my learning from this experience. · I am not supposed to get things done all by myself. It is neither about capability nor the scale of the job. It is all about developing people - taking tremendous amount of time to help them grow and undergo a fulfilling and successful career. Their success is my success. Their failure is my failure. · We are all different. Everyone has different skill sets, distinct background and personality. I need to tailor approaches accordingly in order to continuously stretch and develop them to full potential. As an example, for fresh graduates, I provide great details of a project and embed more checking points in the process to make sure it is on track. On the contrary, I would just tell the objective with a few key points as reminder to a relatively experienced employee and really leave the flexibility and space to him or her. · I could not only look after my own career but to look after around 15 people’s development opportunities. On one hand, I need to constantly look for valuable projects across the organization and regions to expose our team members to new challenges. On the other hand, I would utilize an incredible amount of ExxonMobil tools and processes to assess development needs together with my team members. Only in this way, we could correctly map the needs and offers, and our employees could obtain the most suitable opportunities for them. · Supervisor is not a boss. The company respects people and we respect each other. We don’t just assign tasks to the people but we empower them. We influence the way they think, we convince them the value of the work they do and we let them make decisions. As a supervisor, my job is not to tell them how to do it or you must do it. My job is to provide a direction, assistance and support along the way. My 2 years of experience as a supervisor taught me that a good supervisor should not only improve team quality and efficiency but also heighten the whole team’s morale. · Last point I would like to share is that the company values people who spend time on people development. It is challenging to be a supervisor but really a great opportunity to understand and learn the value of developing people. Once again, the first 6 years in ExxonMobil is just a start and I will certainly continue to enjoy my journey. Are you interested to join me?

I have been working in ExxonMobil Chemical for 14 years with 9 different assignments in 3 different locations – Shanghai, Singapore and Houston. My career in ExxonMobil is full of challenges as well as fun and rewards. The company offers me plenty of opportunities to learn and to grow in a very comprehensive way. Here due to space limits I’d like to share with you more about my relocation assignment in Houston, where I greatly improved my knowledge, skills, maturity, and made good friends from different countries. My first assignment in Houston was in Financial Planning, working on financial models to assess business earnings and plan specific targets to achieve business results over a longer term. After a 6-month project of corporate planning, I became Polyolefins Global Sales Planner, leading a virtual team with members from 6 countries and 5 different locations. From these 2 assignments, I summarized a few suggestions regarding how to work with people with diversified background and how to be successful in a global company. · Set your expectations and keep going forward. It is very basic that you need to know where you want to be, set your expectations, and keep yourself going toward the target. · Stay connected with an effective network. Networking is one of the key elements to success, not only for work, but also for life. When I was in Houston, there’s a network called Asia Network, formed by a group of expatriates from Asian countries with similar experiences. From time to time, we organized activities such as holiday gatherings, fundamental Mandarin lessons and sessions to share different national festivals and legends, etc. This network kept our life outside of work alive and versatile. · Speak up and create your own presence. In Chinese traditional culture, people tend to be quiet and silent as they believe their hard work will be eventually noticed and rewarded. However, in a multi-national and multi-cultural company, you need to create your own presence, stay engaged and take full ownership of opportunities. You need to step out and eventually find your own voice! I’ve enjoyed my work and life with ExxonMobil over the past 14 years, and really grew together with ExxonMobil. If you like to take on challenges and like a diversified long term career path, don’t miss this opportunity. ExxonMobil is the company that will build up the platform and provide what you need to show what you can do!

In 2009, I graduated from Fudan University, with Master Degree in Public Economics. Right after graduation, I joined ExxonMobil Finance organization. As a fresh graduate, I used to worry about the right career path for myself. During an employee forum, I raised this question to a senior manager and his answer was “No worry. Let EM lay out the path for you.” Now as I reflect back, it is indeed the case. Before taking on my current supervisory role, I’ve been assigned to 5 different roles: inventory accounting, financial reporting, business analysis, financial statements review, controls advisory, etc. Each role opens the door for me to different parts of ExxonMobil’s financial accounting and reporting processes. Combining all these experiences, I was able to appreciate the overall picture of finance, from accounting of business transactions to generating financial statements, from plans and budgets for the next year to evaluating to stewardship of the financial results against the plan, from being involved in one part of the process to assessing control effectiveness of the overall business process, etc. It is amazing to see how complex and sophisticated this whole process is and how it is structured methodologically to ensure effective financial control, accurate reporting and ultimately maximizing return to our shareholders. Rotation also exposes me to various businesses. When I was responsible for inventory accounting of the Downstream Lubricants and Specialties business in Corporate Financial Services (CFS), I worked closely with relevant functions to track inventory movement from raw material to finished products, from blending plant to warehouse, and from warehouse to end customers. When I became the business analyst for Fuels Marketing in Business Analysis and Reporting function (BAR), I have very close interaction with the business and was exposed to daily business operations, such as pricing strategies, promotion campaigns, supply arrangements, and how they translate into our bottom line earnings. During my overseas assignment at Downstream Headquarter in US, I learnt about global Downstream businesses. Though some of these businesses currently have no footprints in China, I believe that with the China market growth, I’m confident to see these business presence in China in the future. My perspective and vision has broadened a lot through the rotational assignments. I have accumulated both accounting and business knowledge, which prepared a solid foundation for me when I became the CFS Unit Supervisor for Financial Accounting & Reporting – Hong Kong Team in Apr this year. Now I’m developing new supervisory skills to manage a team of 6 analysts, learning how to coach, motivate and guide them to grow to their fullest potential. So my advice to you is to be open to all opportunities, and be ready to learn. Just follow the path EM lays for you, and you’ll be amazed at far reaching you can grow in your career.

“The right way to make ourselves happy is to love our work and seek pleasure through it.” Looking back at my five years with ExxonMobil, I always hold the confidence that I have made the right decision to join this great company and find my pleasure here. In 2009, after my graduation from Fudan University with Bachelor Degree in Accounting, I started my career with ExxonMobil as a financial analyst. I am really impressed by the long-term commitment that ExxonMobil promises. During these five years, I was given great opportunities to have five rotational assignments within Finance organization, from financial reporting, bank accounting and inter-company accounting in Corporate Financial Services (CFS), to stewardship & analysis earnings in Business Analysis & Reporting (BAR), and now I am back to Corporate Financial Services as the Controls Advisor and Employee Development Coordinator. ExxonMobil has given me good exposure, broaden my horizon and progressively challenged me through leveraging on my accounting knowledge. In addition, I have been also benefited from the series of comprehensive training programs such as new employee orientation, individual effectiveness and technical skill enhancement, etc., where I am able to put what I’ve learnt into practice. In 2013, I was given a short term assignment as zone stewardship analyst in our Bangkok office. This overseas assignment has helped me to develop and enhance my analytical and communication skills, build a strong network of contacts, experience many cross-cultural challenges, and also exposed to Senior Management. Thanks to this assignment, I’ve gained a wider perspective on ExxonMobil Asia Pacific Lubricants business by conducting sophisticated analysis and preparation of zone stewardship package which was presented to the zone leadership team. What’s the most challenging part is that I need to quickly build up business knowledge on Asia Pacific Lubricants performance with special focus on country specific differences and to develop solutions based on different business environment and economic drivers. I was able to leverage on my network of contacts to help me effectively manage the challenges. Meanwhile, I was able to broaden my strategic thinking through communication with other zone analysts to get a better understanding of the overall bigger picture. This is also helpful for me to upgrade my existing analytical skillset to provide more insightful analysis to our business management. It is a rewarding assignment that has opened a new horizon for me. ExxonMobil is also a very people-oriented company. The comprehensive safety programs and a strong safety sense of our employees impressed me a lot when I first joined the company. I was assigned with a good Buddy who has helped me a lot to get adapted to the new environment quickly in the first year. In the following year, I became a Buddy myself and was very happy to pass on this best practice to the next batch of campus hires. Meanwhile, I do appreciate all the excellent colleagues I am working with and without their open and helpful feedback, I would not have improved as quickly as I could. With the comprehensive new hire assimilation and strong career development focus in ExxonMobil, I have made good and steady progress over these years. What is more important is that the company provides me with a sense of belonging and a wonderful to start and develop my finance and accounting career. If you have the same aspiration as me, welcome to join me in this great company!

I graduated from the Business School of FUDAN University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Financial Management. In 2010, I was given the opportunity to be a member of the ExxonMobil Corporation family. The four years in ExxonMobil have been a great experience for me. Right after I joined the company, I started as a financial analyst focusing on corporate financial reporting. This position gave me a first taste of the robust system in terms of how to prepare the corporate financial statements, and I quickly became familiarized with the financial reporting processes, requirements and controls. Meanwhile it also broadened my perspective of the company’s chemicals & downstream businesses and greatly enhanced my business analysis skills. One year later, I was rotated to my second assignment as a General Ledger Analyst. The position provided me even more opportunities and platforms to show my abilities. During this period, I supported the Tax department for the China Tax Reform from Business Tax to Value Added Tax. At the same time, I also had the chance to lead a few internal projects, from which I developed my project management skills - defining project plans, outlining project resources and effectively communicating with others. Within a short period of time, I was given the opportunity to become the BSAM (Balance Sheet Account Management) Coordinator, a position which offered me global exposure with a lot of opportunities to work with people from different functions and different countries. Last March, I had the chance to travel to US to attend the CFS (Corporate Financial Services) global summit and BSAM GFCM global network workshop for two weeks, a very impressive and exciting experience for me. The wheel kept turning for my work life in ExxonMobil. This June, I was promoted to my first supervisory position to be the Financial Accounting & Reporting Unit Supervisor for Taiwan & Korea affiliates. Changing from a individual contributor role to a supervisory role is not just a new exciting journey for me but it also generates challenges as well, and that’s exactly what attracts me to this company. Tthe excitement never ends. ExxonMobil not only provides me great working experiences, but also gives me a lot of opportunities to participate in different social activities, such as off-site meetings, family day, birthday party, recreation club and annual dinner. These activities can be a good platform for others to know me well and also helps me to build more positive working relationship with my co-workers. The work life in ExxonMobil has always been exciting and challenging to me. Whilst my individual effectiveness and efficiency have been progressively enhanced, I also see my personal growth and development and now I become very accustomed to receiving new assignments, learn quickly and accomplish my job efficiently. Every day I learn new things. The positive work environment keeps me motivated and I am able to sustain the high passion I have on my work assignments, inspires me to contribute to the whole team. I am looking forward to seeing you join us and enjoy the wonderful journey with us together.

Name: Vivian Xie
Current Position: Project analyst representing BAR to support North Asia STRIPES using the SAP platform
Current Work Location: Shanghai
Date joined the company: July 19, 2010

I joined ExxonMobil right after my graduation from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2010 as a campus hire. After four years with ExxonMobil, I am convinced that what ExxonMobil offered is far more than a job, but a wonderful long term career. I am amazed by ExxonMobil that provided me various opportunities exploring in the Finance world. During my four (4) years in EM, I have been exposed to five different job positions in both Corporate Financial Services (CFS) and Business Analysis & Reporting (BAR) functions. My first entry position as Banking Analyst in CFS General Accounting, responsible for all PRC bank accounting and cash management, enabled me to build a strong controls and continuous process improvement mindset. One year later, I was given the chance to work in CFS Accounting and Reporting Team as a multi-task analyst for General Ledger, Inventory Valuation and Reporting for HK Chemical Affiliates, which, to large extent, equipped me with knowledge of inventory valuation, foreign exchange and Trial Balance analytical skills. In March 2012, I was rotated to a new role in CFS PRC Chemical Financial Reporting where I tasted the enjoyment of adding value to the company via financial process improvement. A new and great opportunity came along in March 2013 where I was rotated to another function, Business Analysis & Reporting (BAR) as the Corporate Reporting Analyst, responsible for the preparation of financial statements, review and analyze them at a higher corporate level using all the analytical skills which I have since developed and I am very proud of myself for acquiring such advance analytical skills in BAR. In Oct 2013, an even more exiting assignment came along whereby I was assigned to become the only full-time resource to assume the Project analyst role representing BAR to support North Asia STRIPES using the SAP platform and target go-live date is early 2015. This role requires me to work independently to carry out all the required deliverables on project management, strategy development to ensure management alignment on overall project resource demands, timing, and functional requirements. In addition, timeliness and high quality deliverables are key requirements for my role especially dealing with tight deadlines and multi-level and broad functional interfaces required for the profit center and cost centers design and mapping for a number of EM companies in PRC, Taiwan, Korea and India before reviews by cross functional management. I was given the lead role in the User Acceptance Testing which requires me to develop the testing strategy and variants, progress monitoring, provide guidance and perform oversight on business process change documents. I really enjoyed the project assignment and had great fun working with a team of diverse and very talented resources from both locally and internationally and helped me build my technical and professional expertise on project management and multi-level communication skills. I learned a lot and benefited tremendously from the exposure given to me in these various assignments which helped to develop my skills progressive over time. Job rotation not only requires quick learning skill to pick up knowledge and gain experience at a faster pace, but also builds critical thinking, motivation to seek for continuous improvements and initiative to implement all the process improvement steps. Strong control discipline and process continuous improvement are core skills required to achieve the financial data integrity expected of any financial person. My long hours and effect spent on studying and researching into complex financial events and detailed transactions in the ledgers have paid off for me. No pain No gain. Even though, I have to work very hard during year end closing, or during transition periods of process changes, or cross functional discussions, I was grateful to take on the challenges in ExxonMobil where I can build my capabilities and abilities at an early stage of my career with a view to develop my own career path. Supervisors and colleagues, global network, cross functional contacts are great people to work with in EM and they are always ready to support and share. EM provides a very solid platform for individual contributions and advancement and each and every contribution are well recognized by management. I was given many opportunities to present to visiting global senior management on my work accomplishments. I believe not every big company would offer the chance to a young employee to be exposed to senior level management. But ExxonMobil does. ExxonMobil believes in developing its financial resources in multi-dimension through rotation to different and challenging work assignments as well as leading in other general interest committees such as office safety. The Office Safety lead is a big challenge to me as this was the first time I was put into a lead role and also working with senior team members dwelling into areas which I have no prior experience on. However, with an open-mindedness spirit, I was able to overcome the challenge, and I am glad to say that I have gained the valuable experience to lead a lead and a project. ExxonMobil really put strong emphasis on career development of their financial resources. Many opportunities are available to those who are open to rotation and gain broader financial experience within Finance or through some short-term assignments, either locally or overseas. ExxonMobil provides the opportunities to employees to test their limits and unlock their potential and employees have the option to select the path to further develop and grow to our fullest potential. I really appreciate the opportunities and challenges given to me in EM which allows me to achieve more than what I thought I could. ExxonMobil is a great place to start a career, has great people to work with, and offers great opportunities to grow fast. I am looking forward to seeing you join ExxonMobil and making progress together with ExxonMobil!
